Timothy Coleman chosen as National Youth Chamber Choir Fellow

Our Chapel Administrator, Timothy Coleman has been selected for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain Fellowship programme.

Timothy, a Mertonian—he matriculated in 2009—and former member of the college choir, is one of the eight Fellowship holders who will form the core of the 24-strong National Youth Chamber Choir. From September they will be perfecting their abilities in a unique year-long development programme encompassing performance, pedagogy and leadership that aims to produce a new generation of choral leaders.

Commenting on his selection, Timothy said:

"I’m thrilled to be picked as one of NYCC’s Fellows for next year, especially given the difficulty of the auditions, and the quality of the applicants. It’s a mixture of performing, teaching and learning about choral music from some of the best in the business, and I can’t wait to get started!"

Timothy spent three years as a member of the Merton College Choir whilst an undergraduate; during his third year he also sang as a Lay Clerk (professional singer) with the New College Choir, and performed as a soloist with both choirs, singing Pärt’s Passio with Merton at the 2013 Passiontide Festival and Bach's St John Passion with New College. Timothy has played the leads in the well-known stage musicals Joseph, Sweeney Todd and Guys and Dolls; sung the part of Linfea in Cavalli's La Calisto (review), with New Chamber Opera; and directed a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado.

This Friday and Saturday (30 & 31 January) he appears in The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat, a one-act chamber opera by Michael Nyman; and other forthcoming projects include a performance of Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies' The Solstice of Light with The Stonehaven Chorus, and directing a concert performance of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea.
