Merton tops 2013/14 Norrington Table

The recently-published 2013/14 Norrington Table, which measures the performance in finals of students at each of the University of Oxford's colleges, shows Merton in first place. The figures also show that this was a relatively low-scoring year, since our score of 74.7% is lower than last year's 76.14% which placed us fourth.

The results show that Merton's women achieved a higher average Norrington score—75%—than women across the University, who averaged 70%; 40% of our female candidates achieved a First. Merton's men also fared well, achieving the same average score (75%) as Merton women, and exceeding the male University average of 72%; 42% of male Merton candidates achieved a First.

Particularly impressive was the college's outstanding success in achieving University Prizes in a range of subjects, with 16 finalists being awarded a prize. Rankings are not available for all subjects, but Merton students are known to have topped their schools in Economics & Management, Modern Languages, and Physics.

Senior Tutor Dr Rachel Buxton, commenting on the results, said:

"We are, of course, delighted that Merton's students performed so outstandingly. We should also emphasise that, along with Oxford's other colleges, we strive to support all of our students academically and to see them all fulfil their academic ambitions and their potential."

The Final Honour School cohort for 2013/14 was 83, the same as 2012/13.
