Research Interests

I am interested in the political and legal systems of societies in which the state is but one of a number of players. I particularly focus on cities in the late Middle Ages, and have worked on political conflicts as essential features of the political order of cities in Italy and the Southern Low Countries.

I am now extending the focus of my research to cities in the Middle East, and investigating how diverse configurations of multiple micro-political institutions in urban arenas, ranging from families to neighbourhoods, may have given rise to diverse forms of political organisation and order in ways which transcended regional boundaries between Europe and the Middle East.

Because of my interest in comparative and transnational history I am also currently involved in co-editing a collection of articles on this subject in a late medieval context (to be published with Boydell).

Teaching

I am happy to teach in most areas of late medieval European history. For the Oxford syllabus I teach General History II for Prelims (1000-1300), General History VI and VII for Finals (1273-1525), British History III (1330-1550), the Special Subjects on Joan of Arc and Florence and Venice, as well as Approaches to History and Disciplines of History.
