Modern History

Research Interests

My main area of interest is the cultural, intellectual and political history of 20th century Britain, particularly changes in religious and national identity since the First World War. I have published a book on religion and political thought between the wars, Citizenship, Community and the Church of England (2004) and have co-edited a book on Redefining Christian Britain: Post 1945 Perspectives (2007). My current research projects explore changes in public morality since 1945, in particular the development of the permissive society in the 1960s, and later reactions against permissiveness in the 1970s and 80s.

Teaching

I teach British History since 1815, including the undergraduate Special Subject on War and Reconstruction, 1939-45, and the Further Subject on British Society in the Twentieth Century. I also teach some courses on historiography and political thought. I supervise graduate students working on twentieth-century British cultural and religious history, and co-convene a seminar on modern religious history.
