Research Interests

Music and Landscape, with particular reference to Nordic and early twentieth-century British music. I am especially interested in the interdisciplinary connections between Music and Cultural Geography.  Published work includes two monographs (Grieg: Music, Landscape, and Norwegian Identity (Boydell, 2006), and Carl Nielsen and the Idea of Modernism (Boydell, 2010)); three edited collections (the Cambridge Companion to Sibelius (2004), the Cambridge Companion to Elgar (with Julian Rushton, 2004), and Sibelius and his World (Princeton, 2011)), as well as essays and peer-review articles on Elgar and Vaughan Williams. In August 2011 I was scholar-in-residence at the Bard Music Festival, NY State, and I have been one of the co-editors of the Oxford University Press journal Music & Letters since 2005.

Teaching Interests

Undergraduate courses in theory and analysis, music history (especially post-1700), nineteenth-century symphony. Graduate teaching in theory and analysis, music and landscape.
