Catalogues & Finding Aids

Current Collections

Records for all items on open-access in both OWL and Mob are included in SOLO, Oxford University's online union library catalogue. Some less frequently used material is kept in the Stacks and must be requested from Library staff at the issue desk in OWL between 9 am and 4.30 pm.

Electronic resources (journals, databases and e-books), may be accessed through OxLIP+, and SOLO. Many of these resources are only available to members of Oxford University.

Early Printed Books

Records for Merton’s pre-1800 imprints can now be found on SOLO. Nineteenth and twentieth century imprints (especially publications before 1960) may still be recorded only in the card catalogues in the Lower Library in Mob Quad and in the OWL Library. Visiting researchers are advised to make an appointment to consult the card catalogues.

Medieval Manuscripts

The medieval manuscripts and fragments are described in R M Thomson's A Descriptive Catalogue of the Medieval Manuscripts at Merton College, Oxford, with a description of the Greek Manuscripts by N G Wilson (Cambridge: D S Brewer, 2009).  Earlier descriptions are found in H O Coxe, Catalogus codicum manuscripti qui in collegiis aulisque Oxoniensibus hodie adservantur (Oxford, 1852). A small selection of Merton manuscripts have been fully digitized and may be viewed on the website of the Early Manuscripts at Oxford project.

Archives and other Special Collections

Finding aids to the College Archives and lists of other special collections may be consulted in the library by prior arrangement with the Fellow Librarian or Archivist.
